Magnet Programs
The theme of Lied STEM Academy is defined by project- and inquiry-based learning, with a focus on Architecture and Construction Technology, Robotic Automation and Manufacturing, and Computer Science, including IT and Cybersecurity. Lied STEM Academy established over 40 community partnerships with which local and regional businesses have developed a vested interest in the student’s educational experience. Learning primarily occurs through a collaborative process in which STEM concepts and ideas intersect across all curricular lines. Throughout their academic day, students are engaged in the design process, which requires them to define problems, build and test concepts, and present solutions. Teachers utilize technology to implement innovative instructional strategies in non-traditional learning environments. Students participate in a culminating school-wide event, replacing semester exams with a showcase of final design prototypes, referred to as STEM Tank.
Students in Grade 6 discover and utilize the design process among all content and program areas. Students will develop an understanding of the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives. They are challenged and empowered to use and apply what they’ve learned throughout the year to create various devices, innovations, and prototypes. All three programs of study are utilized to allow students better to choose their pathway for grades 7 and 8.
